Cleaning Your Dogs Ears
Here are some useful tips before starting to clean your pets ears.
- Make sure to be in a room that is easy to clean in case the dog shakes its head and the solution drips out.
- Have a towel ready to use to cover your pets ear if you need to keep the solution in.
- If it’s your first time cleaning your pets ears you might need an assistant to help you keep your dog still.
To start the cleaning process read the directions on your cleaner. If you have a solution from your vet make sure to follow the direction closely, to prevent any harm to you dogs ears. At Ashford Manor Labradoodles we like to mix Apple Cider Vinegar and Water in a 50/50 mixture.
After you have read the directions, take the ear flap of your dog and hold it up so its out of the way. Using as much of the solution as the direction tell you, squeeze it into the dogs ears. It’s usually enough to have the canal full of cleaner. At Ashford Manor Labradoodles we use a syringe to put the solution into our pets ears.
While holding the ear flap back, gently massage the solution inside the ear. Some cleaners have a specific amount of time to leave the solution in before wiping the ear. Make sure to do exactly what the directions say. If you do not have a medicated ear cleaner it usually takes about 15 to 30 seconds before you can wipe the solution out.
Using a cotton ball wipe the inside if the ear gently to remove the dirt and wax. Never put any object into the ear canal. Never use a Q tip to remove the wax inside your pets ear as it can harm the dog. Do the exact same thing in the other ear.
It may seem impossible but you can over clean your dogs ears, so do it as often as your vet recommends or the directions on the bottle.
It would be wise to talk to your vet and ask their opinions about the ear cleaner you will be using. Contact your vet right away if your dog is in pain from the ear cleaning, or if he/she develops any redness or swelling in the ear.
Make sure to follow all the directions above. Once you’ve completed cleaning your pets ears, they will be thankful for the great care you have given them.
