Thanksgiving and Your Australian Labradoodle: Keeping Them Safe This Holiday Season
The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the smell of turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie fills the air. It’s that wonderful time of year when families gather, recipes are shared, and festive meals are enjoyed. From pecan tassies and sweet potato casserole to cheese balls and more, Thanksgiving is a time for indulgence and celebration.
As much as we want to include our furry family members in the holiday fun, it’s important to remember that not all foods are safe for our Australian Labradoodles. Some of the traditional Thanksgiving treats we love can be harmful—or even dangerous—to them. This season, let’s be mindful of what’s on the table and what’s within reach for our four-legged friends.
Watch Out for These Thanksgiving Dangers:
1. Fatty Foods and Rich Dishes
While we love turkey with crispy skin, gravy, and rich sides, these foods can be too much for your Australian Labradoodle’s digestive system. Fatty foods, especially turkey skin, can lead to stomach upset or more serious issues like pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. In severe cases, pancreatitis requires veterinary treatment, so it’s best to avoid feeding these rich dishes to your dog.
2. Turkey Bones
After the meal, you might find leftover turkey bones on the floor or in the trash. While your dog might be tempted to chew on them, turkey and chicken bones are extremely dangerous. They can splinter and cause choking, or even puncture the digestive tract, leading to a potentially life-threatening emergency. Always dispose of bones properly and keep them out of reach.
3. Grapes and Raisins
It may seem harmless when grapes roll across the floor or raisins are left out on the counter, but these seemingly innocent foods can cause severe harm to your dog. Even small amounts of grapes or raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs. It’s essential to keep these fruits well out of reach and educate your guests about their dangers.
4. Alcohol
Many of us associate the holidays with a glass of wine or a festive cocktail. However, alcohol and dogs don’t mix. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause disorientation, vomiting, and more serious effects, like a coma or death. Be sure to keep all alcoholic beverages out of your Australian Labradoodle’s reach and remind guests to do the same.
Be Mindful of What Your Dog Eats
At Ashford Manor Labradoodles, we care deeply about the health and safety of your Australian Labradoodle. While the Thanksgiving table is full of delicious food, it’s important to remember that what’s safe for us may not be safe for our pets. To ensure your dog stays healthy this season, consider the following tips:
• Avoid sharing human food with your dog, especially rich, fatty, or seasoned dishes.
• Keep trash and leftovers secure to prevent your dog from sneaking something they shouldn’t have.
• Educate your guests about the dangers of sharing food with pets.
By being aware of these common Thanksgiving dangers, you can help protect your Australian Labradoodle from potential harm while still enjoying all the holiday festivities.
Wishing You a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
We hope you and your Australian Labradoodle have a wonderful holiday filled with love, joy, and good company. Just remember to keep an eye on what’s on the table (and the floor) and be mindful of what your dog eats. A little extra care can ensure that everyone stays safe and enjoys the season to the fullest.
From all of us at Ashford Manor Labradoodles, have a joyful and safe Thanksgiving!
