What is my Australian Labradoodle Puppy Saying?

Dogs, by nature, are pack animals and love to be with and around other dogs.  When having a puppy, your puppy will view you and your family as his pack.    As a member of your pack, it is very important for a puppy to learn how you express love and attention.  In a natural dog pack, dogs lick each other on the mouth as a greeting.  Our natural reaction when this happens is to turn our head, as we don’t particularly like dogs licking our lips. Since this behavior is not “socially acceptable”, we need to replace that behavior with a behavior that is acceptable in our pack.  Continually hugging and petting a puppy will show your puppy that this behavior is an acceptable greeting for your pack, as opposed to him jumping up and licking your lips.  I can’t stress this next statement strong enough.

It is VERY important for you to shower your puppy with a lot of love, attention, and patience during their first several months of their life.

When a puppy expresses an action that doesn’t fit your expectations, like licking your face, patiently redirect that love in a manner that is acceptable for you!  Positive treatment towards your puppy is key to having a well behaved, good-mannered puppy!
