Summer is one of the best seasons for making memories with your Australian Labradoodle. But while we’re busy making memories, it’s important to remember that summer brings a few challenges for our dogs too.
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.
The Pavement Test
Before heading outside, place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Remember that sidewalks, asphalt, and driveways can become much hotter than the air temperature and may cause painful burns.
Water, Water, and More Water
Dogs can become dehydrated much faster during warm weather. Always bring fresh water when you’re away from home and encourage frequent drink breaks during walks and outdoor activities. Hydration isn’t just important—it’s essential.
Watch for Signs of Overheating
Dogs don’t sweat the way people do, which means they can overheat quickly.
Keep an eye out for:
- Excessive panting
- Slowing down during activity
- Bright red gums
- Excessive drooling
- Unusual tiredness
If your dog seems uncomfortable, it’s time for a break in a cool, shaded area.
Plan Around the Heat
One of the easiest ways to keep your dog safe is to adjust your schedule. Early mornings and evenings are often more comfortable for outdoor adventures. Plus, many dogs have more energy when temperatures are lower. Sometimes the smartest summer activity is simply waiting for the cooler part of the day.
The AML Summer Safety Challenge
Before every summer adventure, do the “WATER” check:
W – Water packed?
A – Area safe and shaded?
T – Temperature comfortable?
E – Energy level normal?
R – Ready for fun?
If you can answer “yes” to all five, you’re ready to make some summer memories.
Building Bonds Through Safe Adventures
Our dogs trust us to make good decisions for them. Every time we provide water, choose a shady path, or head home before the heat becomes too much, we’re doing more than protecting them.
We’re building trust.
And trust is one of the strongest bonds we can create with our dogs.
This summer, enjoy the adventures, embrace the memories, and remember that sometimes the best way to show love is through simple acts of care.
Be safe and enjoy the summer fun!
