Building Bonds Series/Ashford Manor Labradoodles

Training is often thought of as teaching commands: sit, down, stay, come.
But the strongest training tool may not be a leash, treat pouch, or commands at all.
It is connection.
Dogs learn best when they feel safe, understood, and connected to the person guiding them. That does not mean there are no boundaries or expectations. It means the relationship comes first.
At Ashford Manor Labradoodles, we believe connection creates confidence — and confidence creates learning.
What Does “Training With Your Heart” Mean?
Training with your heart does not mean letting your dog do whatever they want.
It means seeing the dog in front of you. Understanding your dog’s body language, what are they trying to tell you? Behavior is how they communicate.
Are they excited? Nervous? Overstimulated? Unsure?
A puppy jumping may be seeking connection. A distracted dog may be overwhelmed. A puppy who will not move forward may not be stubborn at all — they may simply need encouragement.
When we slow down long enough to understand why, training becomes less about correction and more about guidance.
Correction Has a Place — But Connection Leads
At Ashford Manor Labradoodles, we believe in encouraging dogs forward while also providing clear expectations and boundaries.
Positive training does not mean permissive training. Dogs thrive when they know what is expected. The difference is how we teach.
Instead of asking:
“How do I stop this behavior?”
Try asking:
“What is my dog trying to tell me?”
That simple shift often changes the entire training experience for you and for your dog.
Small Moments Build Big Bonds
Training happens everywhere.
- It happens when your Australian Labradoodle checks in with you during a walk.
- When they choose you over a distraction.
- When they look at you for reassurance.
- When they settle beside you after a busy day.
These small moments are not separate from training.
They are training.
Connection grows one interaction at a time.
Try This: The Check-In Game
This week, try a simple bonding exercise.
- Take your puppy or dog outside on leash.
- Stand quietly.
- Each time they voluntarily look at you, mark it with praise or a “Yes!” and reward.
- No commands.
- No corrections.
- Just connection.
You may be surprised how quickly your dog begins choosing engagement.
The Goal Is More Than Obedience
The goal is not simply a dog who follows commands.
- It is a dog who trusts.
- A dog who feels safe.
- A dog who chooses relationship.
At Ashford Manor Labradoodles, our Australian Labradoodle puppies begin building these foundations early through socialization, positive experiences, problem-solving activities, and intentional exposure to the world around them.
Because training is not only about creating good dogs.
It is about building bonds. And bonds last a lifetime.
