For many of you who own our Australian Labradoodles are aware that I am against rawhide chews. I do not think they are good Taylor and Summer 2011 Dressedfor your dogs teeth and gums. They can also cause harm to dogs by causing choking and blocking in the esophagus if they get a larger piece. That being said for those who still use rawhide chews here is some more bad news.

At Ashford Manor Labradoodles we believe not only in keeping our Labradoodles healthy by feeding them a premium food and treats we also want you to keep your dog healthy. To do this we keep you up-to-date on dog food recalls as well as continue to put more tips and tricks here on our blog.

Where are they sold?

These products are sold across the United States in stores and online. They are distributed from United Pet Group’s in Edwardsville, Illinois.

What is the source of the recall?

The recall was initiated after United Pet Group realized that specific rawhide chew manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Colombia, as well as one of its suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aid in the manufacturing of rawhide chews.

The compound is an anti-microbial chemical that is approved for cleaning food processing equipment. But it has not been approved in the U.S. as a processing aid in the production of rawhide chews for dogs.

United Pet Group received very limited reports of pet illness based on the volume of possibly affected rawhide chew products manufactured and distributed.

The primary complaint received from consumers was that the affected product had an unpleasant odor. Diarrhea and vomiting were also reported.

Exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds through direct ingestion may cause the following symptoms in dogs: reduced appetite, and gastric irritation including diarrhea and vomiting.

These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity.
